Civil Society Organizations in Liberia

Re-establishing the rule of law is a critical element of rebuilding post-war Liberia. However, many Liberians, particularly those living in rural areas, are unaware of the law. Since 2006, The Carter Center—with Liberia's Ministry of Justice—has provided small grants to local civil society organizations in five counties in Southeast Liberia as well as Bong, Nimba, and Lofa counties, which use drama, community forums, radio programming, and music to educate Liberians about their rights under the law and legal grievance channels.

Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in partnership with Emory University, The Carter Center is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. The Center wages peace, fights disease, and builds hope worldwide.
