Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Awarded 2018 Bill Foege Global Health Award

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter received the 2018 Bill Foege Global Health Award for their commitment to prevent needless suffering and build hope for millions of the world’s poorest people through their work in global health. The award was presented by MAP International on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta and is named for Bill Foege, best known for eradicating smallpox.

A leader in the eradication and elimination of diseases, The Carter Center fights six preventable diseases — Guinea worm, river blindness, trachoma, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and malaria in Hispaniola — by using health education and simple, low-cost methods. The Center also strives to improve maternal and child health in Sudan and Nigeria and improve access to mental health care globally.
