Seeing a Way Around Fear of Eyelid Surgery

In an effort to save the sight of every trichiasis sufferer, The Carter Center and partners are breaking down barriers and finding ways to reduce the fear that may keep patients from choosing to undergo eye surgery that can stop the pain and, ultimately, restore their vision.

The Center supports about 40 percent of these surgeries globally, training and equipping local health workers to surgically correct eyelids deformed by the scarring of multiple trachoma infections.

Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in partnership with Emory University, The Carter Center is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. The Center wages peace, fights disease, and builds hope worldwide.
