Sight-saving Surgery

The Carter Center and partners reached a milestone in 2016 as local health workers performed more trichiasis surgeries than in any previous year.

The Center assists ministries of health in six African countries to prevent Trachoma, the world's leading cause of infectious blindness. Spread from person to person by eye-seeking flies, repeated bacterial infection can lead to trichiasis, an inward turning of the eyelid that can only be corrected by surgery.
