Village Volunteers at Heart of Guinea Worm Disease Eradication

Thousands of village volunteers in Chad play an integral role in the fight against guinea worm disease by providing free first aid and health education, and immediately reporting new cases to public health authorities. They do this to protect their neighbors and communities from this painful, parasitic disease.

The Carter Center heads up the global campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease and works in partnership with Chad's Ministry of Health. The country has waged a seesaw battle with the parasite since the 1990s. Transmission of the ancient disease was believed to have been stopped in 1999, but new cases were discovered, and the country was reclassified as endemic in 2012.
