Real Lives, Real Change: Meet Gopal Siwakoti

A former political prisoner, Dr. Gopal Siwakoti is now one of Nepal's most prominent human rights advocates. His passion for human rights stems from his personal knowledge of what happens when a country lacks democracy and an open society.

Today, as the general secretary of the National Election Observation Committee in Kathmandu, Siwakoti works to ensure that Nepal holds transparent and fair elections.

Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in partnership with Emory University, The Carter Center is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. The Center wages peace, fights disease, and builds hope worldwide.
