Tunisia Votes

Tunisians took one more step in the transition to democracy when they headed to the polls in November 2014 to vote in their country's first presidential election since the 2011 revolution that ended the regime of Zine el-Abidine.

The Carter Center--on its 99th international observation mission--deployed 85 observers from nearly 30 countries and reported Tunisia's presidential elections were held in a calm, peaceful manner.

"It's exciting," said Sarah Johnson, an associate director in the Center's Democracy Program who manages its efforts in Tunisia. "It's the first time the people are directly electing a president who will be accountable to them."
