Ghana Declares Victory Over Guinea Worm

Once the world’s second most endemic country for Guinea worm, Ghana was certified by the World Health Organization in January 2015 as having eliminated this debilitating disease. The West African country was one of the first nations assisted by the Carter Center-led Guinea worm eradication campaign and battled major setbacks on its way to zero cases. Ghana’s victory over the disease ushers Guinea worm toward the brink of becoming the second human disease to be eradicated from earth.
